This one was brought to my attention by a colleague with exquisite taste in black metal. Another good friend of mine would put it into the “journey” metal category, essentially entrancing music to get completely lost in.
Der Weg einer Freiheit, loosely translated to The Way of Freedom, is a Bavarian Black Metal band started in 2010, and currently on their third full length, Finisterre. Aufbruch is the first track of this album and below you can watch a mesmerizing live performance of the song recorded live at Lido, Berlin, October 15th 2017.
One of the standouts of this track is the way post-metal is tightly weaved into the fabric of the song. Pummeling blast beats and shrilling tremolo riffs give way to major key melodies before returning in full force. And it all feels so natural, so free flowing, that I am hard-pressed to find a worthy comparison. Therefore I deem this track one that others will be judged against! It’s just that good. The drum performance by Tobias Schuler is especially note worthy, giving Darkside from Mgla some serious competition in style and execution.
Also you would be missing out not to give the full album a spin, and who knows, maybe give the rest of the band’s discography a shot. It’s all available on Bandcamp.
