Rivers of Nihil – A Home

I don’t normally listen to deathcore… But when I do it’s Rivers of Nihil. I’ll let you imagine the appropriate meme. The five piece from Pennsylvania have returned with an awesome single from their upcoming album Where Owls Know My Name to be released on March 16, a song named A Home.

While this band hasn’t yet released a bad album, I can’t say they’ve ever clicked with me. The technical prowess is there, the atmosphere is there, but something seemed to always be missing… Until now. I don’t know, but there is just something about the fluency of the composition that has finally proven what this band has to say.

The aquatic keyboards are a nice flourish reminding me of Fallujah, and coupled with clean vocals from Adam Biggs, they bring a more down-to-earth feeling to the entire track. I won’t mention the individual performances, as they are on par for a top tier band from a very challenging genre. The three guitars shift continuously, weaving in and around complex ideas, the bass prowls like a leviathan, and all are driven by atomic-clock drums.

I’m really looking forward to this album, even though it’s quite a bit outside my regular spectrum.
